Ethiopian Coffee FAQs

Please reach us at info@iamtradingcompany.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Ethiopia is widely recognized as the birthplace of Arabica coffee and is home to thousands of naturally occurring heirloom coffee varieties found nowhere else in the world. Combined with high elevations, diverse microclimates, fertile soils, and generations of traditional farming practices, these factors create an extraordinary range of flavour profiles.

From the floral elegance of Yirgacheffe to the berry-forward sweetness of Guji and the balanced complexity of Sidama, Ethiopian coffees offer a diversity that is unmatched by any other origin.

There is no universal “better” option—it depends on your customers, roasting style, and flavor goals.

Washed coffees are known for their clean, bright, and refined cup profiles. They often highlight floral aromas, citrus notes, and vibrant acidity, making them popular with specialty roasters seeking clarity and elegance.

Natural coffees are dried inside the coffee cherry, producing sweeter, fruit-forward flavors with notes of berries, tropical fruit, chocolate, and wine-like complexity. They tend to have a fuller body and more pronounced sweetness.

Many successful roasters choose to offer both, allowing customers to experience the full diversity of Ethiopian coffee.

The best time to begin planning is several months before you need your coffee. Ethiopia’s main harvest typically runs from October through January, with fresh shipments becoming available in the months that follow. The most sought-after lots are often reserved well before they are exported.

Planning early gives buyers greater access to premium selections, more flexibility in volume, and smoother logistics.

Waiting until inventory becomes limited may reduce available options and increase lead times.

hipping times vary depending on your destination, shipping method, customs clearance, and port schedules.

As a general guide:

•  Middle East / GCC: approximately 1–3 weeks

•  Europe: approximately 3–5 weeks

•  North America: approximately 5–8 weeks

•  Asia: approximately 4–7 weeks

Our team works closely with trusted logistics partners to provide accurate timelines, required documentation, and regular shipment updates throughout the export process.

Yes.

IAM exports Ethiopian coffee to buyers around the world, subject to import regulations and shipping availability in each destination country.

We assist with export documentation, quality reports, logistics coordination, and communication throughout the process to help ensure your coffee arrives safely and efficiently.

Whether you’re importing your first container or managing an established supply program, we’re committed to making the process as straightforward and transparent as possible.

Our minimum order is one full export container, which is approximately 19,200 kg or 320 bags of green coffee, with each bag weighing 60 kg.

This minimum reflects the most efficient and cost-effective way to export coffee from Ethiopia. Full-container shipments help maintain product integrity, reduce transportation costs per kilogram, simplify customs and documentation, and provide the best overall value for our buyers.

If you’re planning your first import or would like guidance on selecting origins, processing methods, or grades to fill a container, our team is happy to help you build a shipment that meets your business objectives.

IAM works directly with Ethiopian coffee supply chains, sourcing from some of Ethiopia's most renowned coffee-growing regions. Each coffee lot is carefully selected based on origin, quality, processing method, and buyer requirements.

Every shipment follows a structured quality process, including coffee evaluation, lot verification, documentation, and export preparation. We prioritize transparency so buyers can understand the journey of their coffee from Ethiopia to their roastery.
